HI that is an interesting question I think the original term means to uphold a religious standard that is clearly not appreciated. It could also mean a viewpoint and a way of life that is not in agreement. There are many examples, but I feel inside you already know which one it would be. Do you believe that God simply put up a commandment and a member of your family just outright refused to agree or acknowledge the commandments? In the Bible it does predict that this situation would happen:
Matthew 10:32-39
Names of God Bible
32 “So I will acknowledge in front of my Father in heaven that person who acknowledges me in front of others. 33 But I will tell my Father in heaven that I don’t know the person who tells others that he doesn’t know me.
34 “Don’t think that I came to bring peace to earth. I didn’t come to bring peace but conflict. 35 I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 A person’s enemies will be the members of his own family.
37 “The person who loves his father or mother more than me does not deserve to be my disciple. The person who loves a son or daughter more than me does not deserve to be my disciple. 38 Whoever doesn’t take up his cross and follow me doesn’t deserve to be my disciple. 39 The person who tries to preserve his life will lose it, but the person who loses his life for me will preserve it.
In families today not all members are involved with religion, some do not believe in God's way of life and others are atheist. I remind you that the commandments are actually laws or administrative requires of the land or country that have been recorded in Bible, since all the whole Earth belongs to God alone as its creator.
As an example I can use my own family of what divisions caused on earth would be like. Not to long ago I found my family had a long history of incest and that my grandmother was well as my great-grandmother were religiously inclined and both were strong church members even until their death. What commandment of God should be foremost in my mind and heart? It would be Leviticus chapter 18 that has all kinds of sexual sins printed out loud and clear which is the Torah, the Old Testament. The modern version being the Christian New Testament is at:
Ephesians 5:3-5
Names of God Bible
3 Don’t let sexual sin, perversion of any kind, or greed even be mentioned among you. This is not appropriate behavior for God’s holy people. 4 It’s not right that dirty stories, foolish talk, or obscene jokes should be mentioned among you either. Instead, give thanks to God. 5 You know very well that no person who is involved in sexual sin, perversion, or greed (which means worshiping wealth) can have any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
