Hi well during the time that the Bible story tells it was not a time to prove that God is indeed doing works through Jesus Christ. That is because the preaching and miracles were in itself signs that fit before the end of the world should come. There was nothing wrong with asking for proof of God’s involvement in human affairs, but in order that the preaching done by Jesus along with the miracles was enough evidence no other “signs” could have been effective at that point, Hebrews 4:12.
In relation to modern times, it is granted to the people to see physical signs that prove the end of the world has arrived and that God will use the same power to intervene in human affairs, Matthews 24: 29–30.
