Hello, I think this was a tough question and then again it seemed really easy. People acknowledge avoiding material possessions because that is the life that Jesus Christ had, and we are told that he was God’s only true son. Jesus Christ did not work and devoted his life to spiritual pursuit in the form of teaching and preaching extensively. It was also known that God provided the needs of Jesus every day, so he was depended on God to support him financially this is the Bible stories of the life of Jesus Christ in the first four books of the New Testament.
First off it was important to recognize that Jesus Christ was starting a new religion which was called Christianity, his focus lie in founding this even if we did not know it. He planned and traveled extensively to preach and teach In the land of Israel. Secondly his disciples also lived a life free from materialism as they spread the Good News and constructed Bible literature. They strive to copy and imitate the life work of Jesus Christ that is how the Scriptures portray the lives of all the first century followers of Christ.
Yet in answer to your question if you wish to live a life free of materialism you should have a reason to live so. Jesus Christ had the job of founding a new religion we are not the same as Jesus Christ. That does not mean that certain life comforts should be foregone because you seek more spiritual advancement. True advancement spiritual consists of focus within our minds and hearts, and this is what you should actually thrive to do. Like Jesus Christ we can form a relationship with God in that our needs can be provided for mostly in the form of blessings.
Matthew 6:33
Modern English Version (MEV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you.
