HI I would say nothing happened the Bible story was for the end times and what it means to be granted access to salvation. Well, the Tree of Knowledge was not real but today we have the Great Tribulation that we all must confront, Matthew 24:21-22. This test will give God all the information that is needed to either reward eternal life or reject people, Matthew 25:31-46.
As we recall a test was given to Eve in the Bible story it was a psychological testing. The Great Tribulation is the same kind of testing given for the same reason: Psychological Tests used to measure an individual's different abilities, such as their aptitude in a particular field, cognitive functions like memory and spatial recognition, or even traits like introvertedness. These tests are based on scientifically tested psychological theories.
The soundness and moral goodness are still today as it was in the beginning, necessary traits that are allowable for humans to receive salvation or eternal life. Only under this condition can God permit people to live forever, not wicked people who ruin the Earth, Revelation 11:16-18. All in all, I really would think it is wise to meditate on this matter and try and think what you feel salvation must be like, John 17:1-5. Since Adam and Eve were created to live on Earth, Psalms 37:11.
