Hi, I believe that repentance means to change one's mind about a course that was not clear at presence but suddenly became clear and understood. When people sin, they mostly do so because an important point is lacking, it could be experience or some factor. One passage in the Bible really hits home on how this can be every true and that people just did not know and mistakenly sinned, 1 Timothy 1:13. That is why the Bible says that no matter what we sin it will be forgiven us because of faith in Jesus Christ our Lord, James 5:13–15.
